Maurice ‘Murray’ Barbash, z’’l, former Chairman of NAF-IOLR, passed away in Long Island, NY on Wednesday March 13, 2013 after complications from heart bypass surgery. He was 88.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lillian; children Cathy, Susan and Shepard; grandchildren Emma, Ani, Jonah, Lydia, Sam and Eddie.
Services were held Friday March 15 at Bay Shore Jewish Center in Bay Shore, NY. A large crowd of friends and admirers joined Murray’s relatives in honoring his memory.
Per the obituary notice, Murray was a “Loving husband, father and grandfather, visionary builder, conservationist, Mozart lover, avid skier, loyal friend, devoted to the welfare of others.”
He led the North American Friends of IOLR for 19 years, from 1988 to 2007. During that time he was instrumental in providing material support for many of the research programs at IOLR, both directly and through his encouragement of other NAF members.
NAF-IOLR will organize a project to honor Murray’s memory. We are determining specifics, and will make more information available in the near future.
