IOLR Professor Tommy Berman, an internationally renowned aquatic scientist, was found dead in the Galapagos Islands on April 14, 2013. He apparently fell from a cliff while hiking alone. Prof. Berman was 79 years old.
Tommy Berman was responsible for establishing the Kinneret Limnological Laboratory on the shore of Lake Kinneret in 1968. An MIT-trained microbiologist, he was a beloved member of the IOLR faculty who mentored generations of scientists.
Born in Czechoslovakia before World War II, he was sent to Scotland via the Kindertransport and grew up there. As a young man he made aliyah and later became a lifelong member of Kibbutz Amiad.
IOLR supporters join his family, friends and colleagues in mourning his untimely loss.
